Modern Farmhouse Style with Amber Charlet
I love how the farmhouse style feels lived in. The wood tones, paint colors and fabrics just scream home to me. –Amber Charlet, @ModernIAFarmhouse
Have you always been interested in home decor?
I always loved putting my own touch on a space growing up. My love for home decor really grew when we were building our house though. Getting to choose all of the design elements was so much fun.
What inspired you to launch an Instagram profiling your home?
My younger sister really encouraged me to launch a home Instagram account. She would comment on my house every time she was over and said I should share my style with others. I was hesitant at first but it has been a great creative outlet for me.
What has it been like connecting with other home stylists on Instagram?
It has been such a positive experience. There are so many creative and talented stylists on Instagram. I most recently connected with five other Instagram stylists who are all based in Iowa. It has been a great way for me to network.
What is it about farmhouse style that you love so much? Why do you think it’s so popular?
I love how the farmhouse style feels lived in. The wood tones, paint colors and fabrics just scream home to me. I think the style is popular because it has so many natural textures and light and airy colors.
What room is your favorite to style/decorate?
Our living room. We get a ton of natural light in that space so I’m able to use light or dark fabrics and it still feels airy. I also enjoy styling our bookshelves in that space. It’s a smaller space but styling it opens the space up.
What inspires you design-wise?
I usually start a room with a neutral piece of furniture and that is the jumping off point for my design inspiration. I’ll just see something and fall in love.
Do you have any home or design projects coming up this year?
I plan to remodel our master bedroom. Currently it’s a mix of furniture and bedding which do not match with several blank walls. I’m ready to put a personal touch on the space. I plan to incorporate a shiplap accent wall, an upholstered headboard and some metal and wood accents.
What does your dream home improvement look like?
I would update our dining room. Currently we only use the space a couple times a year when family is over. I would add two tall dining hutches and in between the hutches I would build a bench seat which would be a reading nook.
I would add a farmhouse touch by adding a wood accent wall behind the bench area. Having a dual purpose space which would add functional storage truly would be a dream.
Where do you like to shop for furniture and décor?
For larger staple pieces I like to shop at Homemakers. I know I will be getting a quality product that will last. For accessory type pieces I like to shop at Hobby Lobby and Target. I’m a budget shopper and can always seem to find deals. I’m also big on shopping local. In Winterset, we have several home decor shops on the square.
How do you see your design style changing in the next year with new trends?
I see my style leaning a little more towards an industrial feel. I’m really feeling metal textures and glass finishes. So even more of a modern farmhouse feel.
