If you're experiencing sleeplessness, irritability and weight loss, you may have a thyroid condition. Thyroid disorders affect one in three Canadians and are up to seven times more prevalent in women than in men.
The thyroid gland helps regulate certain bodily functions, such as metabolism, growth and development. Its malfunction could lead to nodules (swelling on the gland), Graves' disease (which leads to eye problems such as inflammation and double vision) and, in rare cases, cancer of the thyroid.
If you experience any of the above symptoms, or a swelling of the neck, racing heart, feeling cold, muscle cramps or dry hair and skin, see your doctor. Learn more about six things you need to know about thyroid disorders.
