June's to-do list

Get neat feet, celebrate Dad and more great ways to savour June's days.

By Natalie Bahadur

After much anticipation, summer finally arrives this month so get ready for hot, sunny days and warm, long summer evenings.

Here are 10 ideas to help you get into the summer spirit.

1. Get a pedicure
It may have been a long time since your tootsies last saw the light of day but now that summer's here, they're about to get lots of exposure. Pack away those socks and get thee to a spa for an indulgent treat. If you're plagued by foot problems, check out our guide to fabulous feet and you'll discover the secrets to putting your best foot forward.

2. Go green
Canadian Environment Week (June 3 to 9, 2007) is an important time for all of us to renew our commitment to saving our precious planet. It's a time for each of us to do our part by adopting a greener lifestyle. How much do you reduce, reuse and recycle? Every eco-friendly change you make counts. Click here for tips on all-natural cleaning products you can use at home instead of those harmful chemicals.

3. Go shopping!
It's not like you really need an excuse to shop, but updating your summer wardrobe is reason enough to hit the stores. From over-sized sunglasses and metallic accessories to sweet summer dresses and frilly, flirty tops, the look this season is pretty and feminine. Add a few key pieces to your summer wardrobe and you'll feel invigorated.

4. Try new salad recipes
Summer eating is typically light and healthy. Vary your daily meal routine by spicing things up with salads that go beyond just lettuce, tomatoes and cucumbers. Need some inspiration? Check out Homemakers.com's recipe section for tasty and healthy alternatives to the usual.

5. Be sun savvy
As we head into sunniest days of the year, do your research and educate yourself (and friends and family, too!) about the best ways to protect yourself from harmful UV rays. This doesn't mean that you can't enjoy the hot summer sun -- just brush up on the basics of protection. For more on being sun savvy, click here.

6. Stop and smell the roses
Did you know that June's flower is the rose? Take a walk through your garden or a nearby park and breathe in the fresh air. Don't forget to stop along the way and inhale the fresh and fragrant aroma of the beautiful summer roses. It's an easy way to remind yourself of life's simple beauties.

7. Get outside
Through the cold winter months, physical activity can be confined to the indoors. Well, now that it's June, get outside! Jump off that treadmill and go for a walk or jog in the neighbourhood. Find an outdoor pool to go swimming in and even consider signing up for an outdoor class -- tennis, anyone?

8. Celebrate Dad
Father's Day is on June 17 this year. Show your pops how special he is by making this a day he won't soon forget. A backyard barbecue with all the family might be a good place to start. If he insists on being behind the grill, let him do it -- it is his day, after all. Need gift ideas? Check out a Father's Day gift guide for inspiration at our sister site, CanadianLiving.com.

9. Book a vacation
With the bright sun warming your skin this month, you may not feel desperate to take a vacation just yet. But come fall and winter, you may be itching to get outta town. Start planning your winter escape now. Research destinations, hotels and airfares. In some cases, the earlier you book, the better the price you'll snag. Plus, it gives you something to look forward to when summer ends.

10. Visit a friend
During the winter, many of us tend to communicate with loved ones over the phone or via e-mail. Now that the good weather is upon us, get out of the house and pay a friend a surprise visit. Nothing can replace the good feeling of chatting face to face over a cup of coffee or a refreshing glass of lemonade. So, step away from your e-mail and knock on a dear friend's door.

What are you waiting for? Throw open your windows, welcome the warm summer air into your home and get out there to enjoy the glorious month of June.
