WHAT'S NEW

July's to-do list

Marvel at the stars, savour fresh cherries, buy the right bra size, plus seven more ways to enjoy the seventh month of the year.

By Natalie Bahadur

It's high summer and there are so many ways to enjoy this most coveted season. Looking for a jumpstart? We've got 10 ways to help you jump into July with both feet.

1. Play the lottery
If you're anything like me, you think it'd be awfully nice to win the lottery one day, but the trouble is, you just never get around to buying a ticket. You can gather some friends and have everyone chip in. Play every week and keep those fingers crossed because ... you just never know.

2. Celebrate Canada's Parks Day
Celebrated coast-to-coast, Canada's Parks Day is a day that showcases the history and natural beauty of Canada's parks in every province and territory across the country. This year, celebration events take place on July 21. For more information or to find an event near you, visit www.parksday.ca.

3. Host a charity garage sale
Summer is the perfect time to lighten up. Gather your neighbours and clear out your homes of all the gently used stuff you no longer use. Organize a weekend garage sale and donate the proceeds to the charity of your choice.

4. Decorate with ruby red
July's birthstone is the ruby. In honour of this vibrant gem, bring the energy of this colour into your home with fabulous accessories and accents. Try adding some rich and luxurious ruby red, silk or velvet pillows to your sofa or bed. Feeling even more daring? How about painting an accent wall in this shocking but striking colour?

5. Deep condition your hair
Excessive exposure to sun and chlorine -- not to mention heat-styling and chemical treatments -- can dry out and damage your hair. Restore your hair's lost moisture with a deep conditioning treatment. Treat yourself to one at your local salon or DIY with an over-the-counter treatment that you can pick up at the drugstore.

6. Go star-gazing
Long, clear summer nights mean that the skies are a veritable goldmine of sparklers. Sit out in your backyard (or go someplace that will provide you with an undisturbed view of the heavens) and sit peacefully watching the stars. Marvel in the sheer wonder of them.

7. Pick cherries
Mmmm, it's cherry season! Can't you just taste those fresh, sweet cherries? Cherries are in high season in July so get in on the fun by going cherry-picking. It's a fun activity for adults and kids alike so if you know kids who are getting antsy during their summer vacation, bring them along. Click here for great recipes that'll help you to use your fresh haul.

8. Get a bra-fitting
According to a recent Oprah television episode, 85 per cent of women are wearing the wrong size bra. If you're still wearing the same size bra you were wearing 20 years ago, maybe it's time to pay a visit to a bra fitter. Most department stores offer this service in their lingerie sections, or visit a specialty shop.

9. Write a poem
Put pen to paper and explore your inner poet. If the last time you wrote a poem or short story was in grade school, rediscover the writer inside you. When you're finished, decide whether you want to share your work with someone special or whether it's best kept private. Either way, writing is a creative -- and often therapeutic -- way to express your innermost feelings.

10. Drink more water
Baby, it's hot outside! It's especially important to stay well hydrated during the hot, hot days of summer, so keep yourself in top form by aiming to drink eight glasses of water a day.

However you decide to spend this month, be sure to make the most of it. Summer is short-lived here in Canada, so don't let it pass you by.
