Ah, the "chick-flick." A unique cinematic creation that can wring tears or laughs out of just about any woman through a deft blend of talented actresses, universal experiences and at least one moment in the story when you see yourself as the lead character. You know the classics -- Terms of Endearment, Steel Magnolias, Fried Green Tomatoes and Pretty Woman, to name a few -- but there's a whole world of chick-flick gold out there yet to be mined. Here's a sampling of some outside-the-box offerings women love...and their celluloid counterparts geared towards the men in your life.
Something Old My Fair Lady Warner Home Video, 1964 Chick-flick quick hit: Cockney flower girl Eliza Doolittle (Audrey Hepburn) gets a social makeover from upper-crusty Henry Higgins (Rex Harrison) in this magical rags-to-riches adaptation of the George Bernard Shaw play. It's light, it's lively and it took home eight Oscars, including a best-picture statuette.
Why women love it: A love story + a makeover + musical numbers = what's not to love?! Chick to watch with: Your mom. The boy-movie equivalent: The New Guy.
Something New In Her Shoes Fox Video, 2005 Chick-flick quick hit: Director Curtis Hanson (L.A. Confidential) trains his lens on the troubled, turbulent relationship between responsible, strait-laced Rose (Toni Collette) and her party-girl, screw-up of a sister, Maggie (Cameron Diaz). Divided by nature but united by blood, the two women struggle with professional and personal angst.
Why women love it: The adaptation of Jennifer Weiner's novel perfectly captures the often-rocky but always solid nature of sisterhood. Chick to watch with: Your sister. The boy-movie equivalent: The Brothers McMullen.
Something Borrowed Glitter Columbia/TriStar Home Video, 2001 Chick-flick quick hit: Easily the guiltiest pleasure out there (next to Showgirls!), this dreadful vanity project starring Mariah Carey can be filed under "so bad it's fabulous!" and you're forgiven if you don't openly admit to liking it. Loosely based on Carey's own life, the universally panned film tracks the rise of a young singer as she shoots for stardom.
Why women love it: It's a tough call between the snicker-worthy dialogue, wooden acting and over-the-top self-indulgence of its star. But wow, is it ever fun to mock! Chick to watch with: Your best friend...especially if she's snarky. The boy-movie equivalent: Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo.
