Peek into your closet. If your clothes are crumpled and your shoes are shuffled, you may want to make a day of bringing order to your storage area.
Maxine Henry, a professional organizer and proprietor of Toronto's Maxine the Maximizer, suggests making your closet-cleaning day a fun one. Grab a bottle of wine, invite a few trusted friends, dredge up dusty accessories and dive into your own exclusive fashion show. One more thing: Prepare to be ruthless. Here are Maxine's maxims:
1. Take an inventory
TOSS THE CLOTHES YOU HAVEN'T WORN. How many pairs of black pants do you actually own? Hang them together and edit out any you don't wear along with the ones that don't fit and the colours that aren't right. Set a time limit that works for you; if it hasn't been off the hanger in six months, a year, or more, it's gone.
2. Sort by size, colour, type
Just like in a department store, hang tops and bottoms together, and sort by colour so you can mix and match easily. You could also organize them by category: dress-up clothes, work clothes, weekend clothes, and colour co-ordinate within each category.
