Red lips, smoky eyes -- 2 hot looks for fall 2007

Easy step-by-step instructions on how to create the best beauty looks for fall 2007; plus, Homemakers' beauty editor recommends makeup products to help you get these looks with ease.

Two of this season's strongest beauty trends are often seen as difficult to do and wear - but they're not. Today's 40s-inspired red lips and sultry, smoky eyes are easy looks to achieve at home. Here's how.

Prepare your skin
You need great-looking skin to pull off any look. Makeup just doesn't look as good when it has to compete with dark shadows, blemishes or blotches, so make them disappear.

1. Prep skin with moisturizer and eye cream.

2. Smooth on a sheer foundation, such as Cover Girl Advanced Radiance Age-Defying Liquid Makeup, $12.99.

3. Pat a little concealer over dark under-eye circles, in the dark inner corners of the upper lids, around the base of the nose, and over any other blemishes or discolourations. Try Clinique Line Firming Concealer, $17.50.

4. Use a large fluffy brush to dust skin with sheer loose powder to set your makeup and help it last. Try Laura Mercier Loose Setting Powder, $32.

The smoky eye
Smoky eye makeup has so much impact that many women believe it's a tricky technique to master. Nope! As well, take note: Today's smoky eye is not about black and more black. This season, grey, green and purple are hot shades, but try the look with any colour you like. Except pink -- dramatic pink eye makeup is tough to carry off.

1. As mentioned before, using concealer and foundation to hide shadows, blemishes and blotches is the difference between looking so-so and looking great.

2. Choose an eye pencil in a dark shade of whatever colour shadow you're planning to wear. Black or dark brown works with almost anything if you blend the colours well. Try Dior Crayon Eyeliner Waterproof, $29. Line upper and lower lashlines, and then soften the line by smudging it out with an angled shadow brush or cotton swab.

3. It's easiest to work with an eye shadow quad or trio so all the shades are co-ordinated for you. Try a Lise Watier Quatuor Eye Shadow Quartet in Les Charbons, Les Kakis or Les Neutres, $30.

Sweep the lid from lashes to crease with eye shadow in a shade as deep as the pencil, and run the same shadow under the lower lashlines as well. Blend a medium-tone version of the same colour into the crease. Blend the lightest shade under the brow and into the inner corners of the eyes.

4. Curl lashes and add black mascara.

5. Swirl a touch of soft, neutral powder blush or subtle bronzer on cheeks and sweep back toward your temples.

6. Finish with rosy-nude lip gloss, or gloss two shades deeper than your natural lip tone.
