Fall hair trend: Sleek and polished

Get smooth and stylish hair this season and find out which darker, richer hair colour shades will keep you looking cool in fall 2007.

The weather is getting chillier and you might have already swapped your simple summer dresses for cozy fall sweaters. As you welcome the new season and change your fashions accordingly, it's also a popular time of year for changing your hairstyle, too. A new look is a great way to start the season off with a fresh approach. So, what's hot this fall? Check in with a hair expert to find out what style will have you looking awesome for autumn.

While the summer season bore witness to sexy, effortless hair in loose curls, the fall trend is a bit neater. "The trend this season is less curl," says Marc Anthony of Marc Anthony Cosmetics. "This is not to say that there is no movement, but it is much more contrived. You have to polish up your look for fall," he says.

OK, great. So the trend is sleek and polished hair for fall 2007. But how do you tame your mane to achieve the look? Anthony explains how.

Sleek and polished: How to get the look
"Large Velcro rollers and/or blow-drying your hair with a large round brush are the best ways to achieve this look," says Anthony. He suggests using a thickening or straightening cream to calm frizz and to make hair sleek and shiny.

"You can rough dry it without a brush and follow by using Velcro rollers," he says. Alternatively, he suggests blow-drying your hair with a large-barrel round brush. "The idea for both methods is to get as much volume and shine as you can. If the Velcro rollers give you too much volume, the best solution is to gently blow dry your hair out using your fingers."

Fall hair colour trends
As for colour this season, Anthony says that hair shades will go darker and richer than summer's light shades, for the fall and winter months. "Our skin is not as dark in the winter months so lighter colours tend to wash us out," he says. "If your hair is naturally gray, now is a good time to consider some soft lowlights within the same colour palette as your current hair colour. Think warm sables, dark wheat or medium chestnut colours."

Take a trend and make it your way
However you decide to interpret this season's trend, Anthony says the most important thing to do is personalize it to your own sense of style. "If your hair is curly and you prefer it so, perhaps you should simply control the curl. If you like to wear it short, add a smoother, more polished, finish to it." There are lots of hair glosses and serums on the market that will add moisture and shine to your hair.

"Following trends blindly are for those without imagination and not following a trend at all will age you," says Marc. "Trend-watching is a great way to stay current and make changes to your look without sacrificing your personal style."
