WHAT'S NEW

Fall 2007 fashion trends

Reinventing your fall wardrobe doesn't have to break the bank. With just five new clothing items, you can add fresh style to your old standbys.

The days are getting shorter, the evenings cooler. Ready or not, summer is slipping into fall and it's time to transition your wardrobe from light, frothy summer wear to the heavier, warmer fabrics of fall.

So, what are the trends for fall 2007? Fashion expert and ElleCanada.com editor Lara Ceroni explains which items you simply must have in your fall wardrobe.

"For fall, there are two key trends to keep an eye out for," says Ceroni. "First, it's menswear for women. Think crisp white shirts, chic suits and oversized cardigans. The look is both conservative and edgy."

The second trend is dresses. "Dresses were huge in spring, especially the trapeze silhouette," Ceroni says. "But for fall, dresses are more tailored with simple cuts and lines. Fill your fall wardrobe with column dresses, sheaths and your classic little black dress. It's minimalism at its best!"

You don't have to break the bank or overhaul your entire wardrobe to feel on-trend this fall. Before you hit the stores, heed Ceroni's advice to ensure you stock your wardrobe with the right fall essentials.

1. Add a few key pieces to your existing closet like a high-quality, well-tailored white cotton shirt. It's a great addition to pencil skirts, office suits or, for a more casual look, pair it with denim.

2. Keep an eye out for dresses with unfussy cuts and shapes that are in muted colours like grey, brown and cream. These are "investment pieces" that you can (and will) wear for years to come.

3. Change the look of your fall outfits by adding inexpensive accessories. Wide belts, elbow-grazing riding gloves and thick tights in saturated black, brown, burgundy or even cobalt are all hot this season.

4. Pencil skirts are back in a big way. Long gone are the impossibly short hemlines of seasons past and full, voluminous shapes. Get yourself a lean, sophisticated pencil skirt that hits you below the knee. You'll wear it over and over again.

5. Another must-have this season is a slim belt with metal details. Forget the big buckles from last season. Instead, pick up a skinny belt in faux croc leather or patent. It's an easy and affordable way to update your look.
