Beauty how-to: Dewy skin

Learn how to apply makeup that'll leave your face with a natural-looking, beautiful glow.

By Natalie Bahadur

When flipping through the pages of many magazines, it's difficult not to notice the fresh, dewy complexions of the models and actresses who grace the pages. OK, so that enviable flawlessness might be in part to the magic of photo editing software, but it's not just that...it's the glow, too.

Melissa Gibson, a makeup artist with MAC Cosmetics in Canada reveals some of her best skin secrets. Find out which products she uses to create that fresh, glowing, just-had-a-fab-facial look.

Here are her step-by-step instructions on how to get your skin to look fresh and dewy without looking oily:

Dry skin
Start with a heavy moisturizer to plump your skin. Add a lightweight liquid foundation and buff it in with a soft bristle brush. When applying it this way, the foundation works with the moisturizer to remain dewy. Use a small amount of loose powder in the T-zone areas (under the eyes, around the nose and on the chin) to finish.

Oily skin
If you have oily skin, you have options. You can use an all-in-one powder/foundation, which looks best on oily skin because the powder works with the oils in your skin to look more natural. Or, you can use a mattifying liquid foundation with a pressed powder. Apply the pressed powder only in the areas where needed. Add bronzers or sheer iridescent powders to add a slight glow.

Combination skin
If you have combination skin, you can use quite a few different products to achieve a dewy finish. Gibson prefers using a basic moisturizer along with sheer liquid foundation. Use a creamy concealer only in the areas where you slightly need more coverage. This way, you allow your skin's natural oils to show through your makeup subtly, without looking greasy. Again, use a little loose powder in the T-zone area only.
