11 budget beauty products to boost your mood

Check out some of the best beauty products and little pick-me-ups to chase away winter's gloom without leaving your wallet bare.

Tooth whitening
6. Whiter teeth make your whole face look brighter, even when you don't wear makeup. Severely stained teeth may require professional attention, but for moderate or light staining, whitening kits are effective and comparatively easy on the wallet. Try the Go Smile B1 Tooth Whitener kit, which promises whiter teeth in seven days, or Crest Whitestrips Premium Plus, which delivers measurable results in three days and, after 10 days, whiter teeth for 18 months. Go Smile, $89 at Sephora. Crest Whitestrips, $49.99 at drugstores.
Eye shadow as liner
7. Subtle light-reflecting makeup is an easy brightener. Instead of plain dark brown eye liner, go for a shimmery dark brown eye shadow as liner (use an angle brush to apply).Try a Smashbox Single Shadow in Bronze, or for more impact try an all-flattering purple, such as Smashbox Single Shadow in Camera or Chic. Better yet, pick up a Smashbox Green Room eye shadow quad in Bamboo or Blossom. These palettes will stretch your beauty budget to include planting a Moringa tree in a developing country (happens with the purchase of a Green Room product), plus the formulas are eco-friendly and the packaging is biodegradeable. Single shadow, 1.7 g, $16; Green Room quad, 6.4 g, $38. Both at select Shoppers Drug Mart Beauty Boutiques and Sephora.

Blush
8. A pop of bright blush on the cheeks wakes up the complexion and makes eyes sparkle. Use a cream, mousse or gel blush for a natural rosy finish. Try Revlon Cream Blush in First Blush or Maybelline Dream Mousse Blush in Peach Satin. For a just-off-the-yacht glow, try my favourite beauty must-have duo, DuWop BronzeRush. Don't let the colour of the gel blush scare you - over the bronzer, it's the perfect sheer shade to give you that slightly sunburned warmth from your childhood days. Revlon cream blush, 3.4 g, $11.95; Maybelline mousse blush, 5.75 g, $8.99. Both at drugstores. DuWop bronzer plus blush, 16.5 g, $35 at Sephora.
Lip gloss
9. For most women a new lipstick or lip gloss is the first pick-me-up purchase of choice. Top makeup artist Pat McGrath has re-vamped Cover Girl Outlast Lip Color so you can choose from 41 new, richer, 18-hour shades. If you're a gloss fan, try Burt's Bees Super Shiny Lip Gloss, which contains no petrochemicals or synthetic preservatives. Cover Girl lip color and top coat, $10.49; Burt's Bees gloss, 15 mL, $9.99. Both at drugstores.

Fragranced bath fizz
10. Just having the time for a good long soak is a beauty pick-me-up, but don't stop there. Throw a Lush Happy Pill bath fizzy into the mix and revel in the sparkling scents of grapefruit, bergamot, lemon, orange flower and mandarin. $5.95 at Lush Boutiques.
If it makes you smile, then it's a beauty pick-me-up -- who doesn't look better with a smile? So my new favourite treat absolutely counts: 11. Cadbury's Caramilk Deluxe has a caramel center topped with dark chocolate filling, all encased in milk chocolate...yum! $1.09 for four pieces.
