WHAT'S NEW

December's to-do list

10 ways to relish in the delights of the last month of the year.

By Natalie Bahadur

6. Send out Christmas cards
With the popularity of the Internet and e-mail, fewer and fewer people seem to go the old-fashioned route and mail out personalized Christmas cards these days. Pick up a box or two of pretty cards and spend an afternoon writing personal notes to friends and family.

7. Eat an apple a day
December is notorious for being the month when we blow the healthy eating habits we so carefully cultivated throughout the year. If avoiding the ever-present chocolates and shortbreads seems impossible, don't beat yourself up for indulging this month. But when you can, be sure to include a healthy dose of fruits and veggies into your diet. Start every day with an apple as a reminder.

8. Donate to a charity
The holidays are all about giving so this month, don't forget about those who are truly in need. Donate time or money to a cause you want to support. Visit www.canadahelps.org for more information on how you can help others. CanadaHelps is a registered charity created to accept charitable donations online for Canada's 80,000 charitable organizations.

9. Go for a long walk
Bundle up because, baby, it's cold outside. But don't let the thought of Jack Frost nipping at your nose stop you. Head outside for a brisk walk and enjoy the invigorating freshness of the crisp winter air. A long evening walk means you can enjoy the twinkling Christmas lights on your neighbours' houses -- plus you can walk off that extra helping of dessert.

10. Make a resolution
OK, sure, resolutions are those dirty little promises we make to ourselves and we very rarely ever keep them. This month, as you think about the new year that lies ahead, think of one thing you want to do or accomplish next year. Make it a realistic, achievable goal and write it down, along with the things you can do in order to reach your goal. Many experts believe that setting your goals onto paper increases your chance of success in accomplishing the task you've set for yourself.

Good luck with whatever you set out to accomplish this month, dear reader. Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!
