April's to-do list

Decorate with daisies, plan a road trip, plus 8 other ways to make the most of this month

By Natalie Bahadur

For many Canadians, April's arrival means we've survived another cold winter and we're about to be rewarded with blue skies and sunny days. So shed that heavy winter feeling and check out these 10 ways to lighten up for spring.

1. Decorate with daisies
April's birthday flower is the daisy. Bring the delicate beauty of these spring favourites into your home by displaying them in glass vases around your house. Choose from traditional yellow and white daisies or add a vibrant splash of colour to your home with brightly hued Gerbera daisies.

2. Buy new sheets
Bring that fresh, clean, spring feeling into your bedroom by investing in some new linens. Crisp white cotton sheets are the perfect way to welcome the season. So pack away those winter flannels and treat yourself to a good night's sleep in fresh sheets.

3. Host an Easter egg hunt
Easter falls on April 8 this year and if you're celebrating this holiday, why not host an Easter egg hunt with friends and family? Stock up on chocolate eggs of all sizes and hide them around the house (and in the backyard if weather permits). This will be especially fun for little ones.

4. Take care of those pearly whites
April is Dental Health Month. Now, we know everyone hates that dreaded trip to the dentist's office, but if you haven't had your regular checkup lately, now's the time to book it. Plus, make a promise to yourself to take excellent at-home care of your teeth. Brush and floss conscientiously to avoid future oral health problems.

5. Save your pennies
There's an old saying: Take care of the pennies and the dollars will take care of themselves. This month, start a piggy bank that'll grow into a sizeable nest egg before you know it. At the end of each day, throw your loose change (from pennies and nickels to loonies and toonies; whatever you can afford) into a jar or piggy bank. In six months' to a year's time, this "found" money will pleasantly surprise you.
