10 holiday health tips

Avoid illness during the busiest and best time of the year with tips on preventing a cold or flu, reducing stress, plus eight more health boosts.

By Vickie Reichardt

6. Move it
Even if you have loads of things to do, squeeze in a little exercise. It's a great way to burn extra calories and work off some of your stress. Says Finkelstein: "We know that that's going to decrease your stress level, so that's a way to take some time for yourself and to support your body through physical activity."

7. Beware of food cooties
Think that tray of hors d'oeuvres is a safe bet? Think again. Finkelstein warns that partygoers should be mindful of viruses (such as Norwalk), which can spread through improper food handling and preparation. Some key factors to remember: maintain clean work surfaces, avoid cross-contamination of foods, keep hot foods hot and cold foods cold and, as always, wash your hands before you touch anything.

8. Be a happy, healthy wanderer
Jetting off somewhere exotic for the holidays? Visit a travel-medicine clinic before you head to the airport. "If you're going abroad or to another country, make an appointment with a travel medicine specialist who can give you some advice on how best to avoid illness while you're traveling," says Finkelstein. There, you can get necessary immunizations, as well as valuable information on a wide variety of health and safety issues for whichever place you'll be visiting.

9. When the weather outside is frightful...
If you'll spend time outside over the holidays, be smart and be prepared. Wear sunscreen, drink plenty of water and remember to take the appropriate precautions for whatever activity you have planned.

10. Think positive thoughts
Mental health goes a long way toward ensuring physical health, and Finkelstein says that maintaining a positive attitude during the seasonal mayhem is one key way to staying healthy. "Making sure that people are relaxed and have a good attitude toward the holiday season is something that will support their health," he says.

Whatever you do, stay healthy during the holidays -- or any time of year -- by avoiding germs and maintaining a tip-top immune system that'll help your body fight any battle.
