When life's multiple challenges and struggles become overwhelming, it can be tempting to dwell on problems. But there are healthy ways to cope with hard times, without taking a walk down Victim's Lane.
Essentially, empowerment is about tapping into your strengths to get past predicaments. It's about meeting challenges head-on instead of being demoralized and immobilized by them. When facing adversity, empowered people don't curl up and hide; they bounce back and look at what they can do to recover. Here are a few ways to build resilience and reclaim your strength:
1. Build a network of supportive pals If you've always tried to go it alone, let that go and reconnect with the people who care about you. Seeking the support you need in challenging times is a sign of strength - not weakness. With a shoulder to lean on, you'll feel more grounded and less fragile.
2. Seek job fulfillment Nothing is more energy-sapping than staying stuck in work you don't enjoy. Unfulfilling work is an emotional drain on you and everyone around you. Find work you are passionate about and notice the pay-off in increased motivation and happiness.
3. Indulge in your passions Many of us are overly-stimulated in hectic environments and we may have lost touch with what truly excites us. Rediscover what interests you, explore what you feel drawn to but are not sure why, and make the time to pursue your passions. Is now the time to write that novel or get out your oil paints? Whatever your passion, express it and realize a heightened sense of wellness. 4. Try new things Stepping out of your daily routine is often a great kick-start to changing your perspective on life. Take a trip to a place you've never been, attend a philosophy series on a topic that interests you. Whatever you choose to do, take on an activity that gets you out of your comfort zone. You will feel renewed, enriched and intensely alive.
5. Live and learn, but don't dwell on the past Hindsight shouldn't overshadow the here and now. Life experiences shape us and lifelong learning is a hallmark of a life well-lived. So throw away the regrets, let go of all that "baggage" and live your best life through the legacy of your past experiences.
