10 cancer fund-raisers to support

How to make a difference by giving to cancer research.

By Colleen Tully

6. Colorectoral cancer
Frequently an asymptomatic disease, colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in North America. How to help? Go shopping!

When you buy from one of the online merchants registered with the National Colorectal Cancer Campaign, you earn up to 15 per cent off your purchase, plus all of this rebate money gets donated back to Colon Cancer Canada. See www.coloncancercanada.ca for a list of online stores and for more details.

7. Leukemia and lymphoma
Cancers of the blood and lymph systems affect people of all ages. Visit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's extensive online store for lots of sporty outerwear plus items such as picture frames and bracelets. Also check out the Coinstar machine at your local grocery store to donate a portion of your loose change. For more information about leukemia and lymphoma, visit www.leukemia-lymphoma.org.

8. Youth cancer survivors
INFUSION Canada helps adolescents and young adults diagnosed with cancer to develop life and leadership skills. A large part of their fund-raising goes toward post-secondary bursaries and scholarships for young cancer survivors.
Their online store is coming soon, where you can expect to find T-shirts, tank tops, sweats, lanyards, polos and more.

Events
9. Breast cancer
Rethink Breast Cancer hosts ongoing cultural events across Canada, such as art exhibits, fashion shows, galas, guest speakers and more. Check out their site at www.rethinkbreastcancer.com often for listings of upcoming events.

10. Prostate cancer
Prostate cancer is the number 1 cancer threat to Canadian men, afflicting 1 in seven men.

The Prostate Cancer Research Foundation of Canada hosts three signature national events throughout the year: the Green & White Gala (March), the Father's Day Run (June) and the Wake Up Breakfast (November). There are also community initiatives taking place throughout the year. E-mail events@prostatecancer.ca for more information.

And don't forget -- money isn't the only weapon for finding a cure. Volunteering a few hours of your time at the organization of your choice is equally valuable. Recruit a friend or family member to make the experience more enriching and help you to keep your commitment.

Cancer touches each and every one of us across the globe. Supporting cancer research doesn't just help those you know -- it's like a special gift to every person on earth.
