With ongoing cancer prevention and research, Canadians are sharing more and more stories of hope and survival. Such research would not be possible without fund-raising initiatives, and ongoing funding is our only chance for even better survival rates and the dream of a cure.
There are so many ways to support cancer research, including directly donating, buying merchandise or participating in events. Below are 10 sites representing the many faces of cancer, all with different ways to give.
Direct online donations 1. Retinoblastoma Retinoblastoma is a rare cancer of the eye that typically affects children between birth and five years of age. RB hits one in 15,000 live births, and about 23 children are affected in Canada each year. Make a donation online at www.rbsociety.ca.
2. Pancreatic cancer Cancer of the pancreas is one of the most devastating cancers and it receives relatively little fund-raising or media attention. Five-year survival rates are low, and complete remission is still extremely rare. You can make a donation via the Pancreatic Cancer Foundation's website at www.pancreaticcancerfoundation.com.
Merchandise 3. Thyroid cancer Jewelry fund-raiser for Thry'vors Inc. While the prognosis for thyroid cancer is good for patients under the age of 45, the disease can recur over a lifetime. Download the PDF order form at www.thryvors.org and choose either a pearl necklace or Swarovsky crystal earrings with every $50 donation.
4. Ovarian cancer It's the fifth leading cause of cancer death in women, but there are still no specific screening recommendations or prevention strategies for ovarian cancer. New for 2007, couture designer Yumi Eto created a signature scarf ($30) and long-sleeved T-shirt ($30) for Ovarian Cancer Canada. Visit their online store at www.ovariancancercanada.ca for more classy items.
5. Brain cancer In Canada, 55,000 people are living with a brain tumour and 10,000 new cases are diagnosed each year -- 20 to 25 per cent are children. Visit the online store at www.braintumour.ca for "Imagine a Cure" wristbands, fleece sweatshirts and magnets. You can also donate your HBC or Shoppers points online.
