5 steps to success From the YMCA of Greater Toronto, here are "Five Habits of Successful Exercisers."
1. Picture yourself having successfully reached your fitness goal. Visualize that image every time you work out.
2. Focus on improving fitness levels, not losing weight. This means a balanced exercise program that includes cardio and strength training.
3. Schedule workouts (in detail) in advance. Make an appointment with yourself to exercise. Don't write "workout" on your calendar; jot down "power yoga class, Tuesday after work, 40 minutes."
4. Increase exercise intensity gradually. Too much too soon will lead to burnout and possible injury. Progressively intense workouts are not only safer, but they also burn more calories.
5. Remember the intrinsic rewards of regular exercise: feeling invigorated and good about yourself.
Fitness fact Staying hydrated is just as important when participating in winter sports, such as skiing, as in summer activities. Dehydration can affect the body's ability to regulate heat and thus increase the risk of frostbite. Water is preferable; caffeinated drinks, such as a steaming cup of coffee, can leave you dehydrated.
