7 secrets to successful gym memberships

Just starting to exercise? This is the plan for you!

Whether you're considering joining a gym for the first time or you're renewing a membership, it's an expense worth investigating. The cost of registering alone can be an incentive to get the most use of the gym's services, but that motivator only lasts so long. We asked Meredith Scipio del Campo from the Metro-Central YMCA of Toronto for her secrets to successful gym memberships -- new or returning.

1. Always pick an exercise or physical activity you enjoy. There's no sense in running if you're not able to or, worse, simply dislike the activity.

2. Try to go to the gym with a friend or family member who is in the same or similar shape as you. It will keep you motivated and inspired.

3. Try a variety of exercises to prevent boredom (it's also better for the body).

4. Don't overdo it. Go to the gym two to three times per week for the first month and gradually work your way up to four to five times after the two-month mark -- if time permits.

5. A visit of 30 to 40 minutes is sufficient for the first month. Do a light cardiovascular exercise, such as swimming, riding a bike or walking on a treadmill, or join an aerobics class. Exercising in a group is always more fun. Instructors can motivate you, and the time will go quickly when in a group.

6. After a month, try to do some light weights to tone the muscles. About one hour at the gym is enough after the first month.

7. Consider exercise a lifestyle. Make it a priority. Realizing that it's about your health and well-being will make you even more committed.

Haven't worked yourself up to going to the gym yet? Try adding 10 to 15 minutes of cardio to your routine at least three times a week. Walk around your neighbourhood, or, for an extra challenge, climb up and down your stairs while carrying a full laundry basket.

Fitness facts
• According to a 2000 University of Arkansas study, gardening works better than jogging, cycling, aerobics and swimming to protect women over 50 from osteoporosis. Can you dig it?

• Did you know an hour of cleaning burns more calories than a half-hour aerobics class?

• The layer of air next to your skin is the key to outdoor comfort. Moist air conducts heat away from your body 25 times faster than dry. On chilly days, wear moisture-wicking undies and socks (synthetic fabrics are good) and breathable outer layers such as fleece or Gore-Tex.

Consult a physician before beginning any exercise program, especially if you have been inactive.
